I meant to add 10% for SQL under web applications > Web Applications: > 60% - Javascript > 30% - C# 10% - SQL
Why Excel or R over J: In general, each has its strengths for how I apply it Why Excel: - Excel powerpivot is nice for exploratory data analysis. Often it's more productive use a pivot table to explore data vs writing queries in R or J or SQL to cut the data different ways - Excel easily produces nicely formatted results that can be copy/pasted into emails or powerpoint - Can be shared with my colleagues who all use Excel Why not Excel: - Not always as repeatable - Not as transparent (formulas spread out everywhere vs consolidated in a script) Why R: - Statistical work has ready-made packages and good documentation - data.table package is effectively an in-memory db that is really fast to query, update - scriptable/repeatable Why J: - Fun - Concise - Versatile... can integrate with other apps (Excel/COM, C dlls) - Different (sometimes it's nice to have a change of pace... flex different fingers / mind ) - scriptable/repeatable - makes a nice desk calculator too I'm sure there are other reasons too but these are the ones that come to mind On Wed, Apr 22, 2015 at 12:21 PM, EelVex <[email protected]> wrote: > > Why Excel or R over J though? > > On Wed, Apr 22, 2015 at 7:14 PM, Joe Bogner <[email protected]> wrote: > > > Over the past year my programming time is probably spent 80% writing web > > applications and 20% data analysis > > > > Here's a rough breakdown: > > > > Web Applications: > > 60% - Javascript > > 30% - C# > > > > Data Analysis: > > 50% - SQL > > 25% - Excel Power Pivot (DAX... that's a language) > > 15% - R > > 9% - J > > 1% - Small amount of K/Kona > > > > Yes, I miss J > > > > > > > > > > > > On Wed, Apr 22, 2015 at 11:49 AM, EelVex <[email protected]> wrote: > > > > > Do you ever switch to other languages?
