I meant to add 10% for SQL under web applications

10% - SQL

Why Excel or R over J:

In general, each has its strengths for how I apply it

Why Excel:
- Excel powerpivot is nice for exploratory data analysis. Often it's
more productive use a pivot table to explore data vs writing queries
in R or J or SQL to cut the data different ways
- Excel easily produces nicely formatted results that can be
copy/pasted into emails or powerpoint
- Can be shared with my colleagues who all use Excel

Why not Excel:
- Not always as repeatable
- Not as transparent (formulas spread out everywhere vs consolidated
in a script)

Why R:
- Statistical work has ready-made packages and good documentation
- data.table package is effectively an in-memory db that is really
fast to query, update
- scriptable/repeatable

Why J:
- Fun
- Concise
- Versatile... can integrate with other apps (Excel/COM, C dlls)
- Different (sometimes it's nice to have a change of pace... flex
different fingers / mind )
- scriptable/repeatable
- makes a nice desk calculator too

I'm sure there are other reasons too but these are the ones that come to mind
