Guy is VERY aware of the history of scans and divide-and-conquer. Check his CACM papers from the 1980s-ish era.
He may have avoided commenting on their age because, around 41:30 into his Google talk, he trashes DO loops and linked lists as being old school. So, he may have wanted to avoid having to defend scan from criticisms of it also being old school.
