I tried to find the earlier discussion, and I found a lot of questions you had raised. I presume you have since found answers you are comfortable with, so I will not try to address them here. That said: Capping works, but can often be done automatically, so there is little motivation for standardizing on that approach. It'll happen plenty often already. In my opinion, this kind of issue (finding alternatives to automation) has more to do with how humans like to focus their attention than on anything else. Call it a hazard of the computer industry, perhaps? But what this also means, in my opinion, is that any alternatives you find will soon suffer the same fate.
