It's all about selecting the right tools:

A good editor: termux makes it easy to install for instance vim or emacs,
if you like them. On top of that, it lets you install git, and a whole lot
of interesting apps, in standard .deb packages which also seem to come with
regular updates.

A good keyboard: I really like messagEase, a keyboard that places *all*
ASCII and more characters on only 9 buttons. The characters you get depend
on taps, swipes, swipe-and-back and circle gestures. It has a quite steep
learning curve, but once you get the hang, all other keyboards get very
difficult to appreciate.
Another good alternative is hacker's keyboard, which offers a full keyboard
with cursor keys.

Those two things, together with the portability of a phone, and the
terseness of (tacit) J, makes it, in my view a very handy combination.
