Ok, let's review: ---------------------------------
Rank (symbolized by the double quote character) is different from quoting (symbolized by single quote or apostrophe character). Rank is a conjunction (and a word by itself), quoting is a word forming mechanism (and just a part of a word). --------------------------------- The grammars of conjunctions tend to be things like x (u conjunction v) y or (u conjunction v) y The stuff inside parenthesis (u and v) is required before the conjunction can take action. The stuff outside the parentheses is handled by whatever the conjunction produces (in the above two example lines, I'm assuming that the conjunction created a verb). --------------------------------- The rank conjunction always creates verbs. --------------------------------- If there are no parenthesis involved, an expression like a conjunction1 b conjunction2 c (where a b and c are verbs or nouns and conjunction1 and conjunction2 are conjunctions and conjunction1 produces a noun or a verb) parses as if there were parenthesis around the left hand side: (a conjunction1 b) conjunction2 c --------------------------------- So, if conjunction1 and conjunction2 both are the rank conjunction and if a is a verb and if b and c both are nouns, it's like this: (a"b)"c --------------------------------- That's probably enough for one message. If you want to go deeper, let's talk specific examples. Thanks, -- Raul On Thu, Jan 2, 2020 at 1:21 PM 'Jim Russell' via Chat <[email protected]> wrote: > > Looking for a link to help me understand.
