FWIW, when you add supplementary groups to your user, these only get picked
up when you start a new login shell. In particular, this means any programs
will only see your newly added group if you log the user out and back in
again.

It's definitely a common stumbling block and non-intuitive.

The reason for this behaviour is that linux processes inherit the groups
of their parent processes, in this case, your window manager, I assume.
However, when you add a new group, this doesn't automatically add that
to the already running processes, so they remain unaware of the change
until restarted.
