The view of the original Apple, in that pdf, is very different from my
own view of that system.

The Apple II came with circuit diagrams in the back, which (if you
knew how to read them) clearly showed how video was generated. And,
the roms could be disassembled, so that you could see how the two
different basic implementations (integer basic and floating point
basic) were implemented. Meanwhile, the MSDOS systems were... well,
PCs had a standard bus, and were extensible, but there was so much
more going on there -- so many different products -- that it's not
like they were particularly comprehensible at the same level.

Nowadays, though... pretty much everything has far exceeded the
complexity of both. And, it's pretty typical that we expect no one to
adequately understand how they really work.

And, ... hilarity ensues...

But, I guess different perspectives all shed different light on the ..
uh... different subjects? And, we do tend to think in analogies...
