>Freenet is here to restore much of the balance of power back to the

>There are individuals who molest and disembowel little children, and there

And let us not forget, that it is not freenet that is empowering these
people. The people who would pornographically display or produce such
depravity of children only need a medium in which to distribute it.

The emergence of ANY new tool of distribution is going to be used by these
people, regardless of the intentions of the creators.

We cannot simply ban the creation of any new distribution tool, just because
it has the inherent POTENTIAL for abuse by the people who disrespect
children.

Freenet does not "enable" the "criminal", it merely presents a new method of
distribution.

>IMO, Freenet is predicated on the notion that the more individuals are
>trusted, the more they will conduct themselves in honour of that trust.

Trust, although valuable is not the issue. The issue is that of tolerance,
and the understanding that, no matter what you do, there will be people who
will attempt to use the system for purposes not supported by the majority,
and nothing can be done about it. The purpose is not to prevent a
technological advance from occuring because of what some miscreants "might"
use it for. Let's ban telephones because some terrorists use it to exchange
plans to destroy something...

>For me, Freenet is here to stay. Every time I build a system, Freenet is
>one
>of the very first pieces of software to be installed.

Cloning, although frowned upon by a majority(I support it), is not going to
go away. Technology, once discovered as possible, will be utilized by some
people regardless of the "laws" other people decide to scribble down on
pieces of paper. The paper is powerless to stop them.

Freenet may be just the first in the attempt at completely free data
exchange, and it certainly won't be the last.
