a general question: why does freenet use java?

if it is all about freedom as it says , it should not depend on (and thus promote) non-free software!

i really like the spirit of it and i would like use it (and spread it ;) ), but from an ideological point of view refuse to install non-free software on my computer.

also the dependency on sun' java reduces portabaility by tieing the user to certain operating systems and cpu-architectures. please consider free alternatives over java or at least make it useable with gcj.

thank you very much and keep up the work
