Fact 1 - MySQL has a thriving open source business model
MySQL is distributed with dual license, GNU or commercial. I guess
MySQL did not receive sufficient commercial license fee to run the
company. However it attracted a huge amount of venture capital so
that it has much cash to spend.
IIRC, MySQL has been dual license throughout most of it's history and
has done well with both license fees and consulting. It is advantageous
for a commercial enterprise that open sources its product if it
generates additional business directly or indirectly. For it to be an
effective business strategy, the company needs to get something back, be
it better bug reports or actual bug fixes, new features and/or
performance improvements, users who support other users, or word of
mouth advertising. Every situation is a bit different and its hard to
say whether Jsoftware would benefit from going open source.
