As a result of some small better understanding of my Ubuntu 7.1 version
I can now offer the following (fairly easy) installation sequence.

0. Applications > Add/Remove Applications
        Search "Sun Java 6"
Select "Sun Java 6 Web Start" from the list of applications
        Apply Changes (Requires a Password)
        Agree to Sun licence
1. Download J32 Linux to Desktop (J601c_linux.tar.gz)
Right Click downloaded file on the Desktop
Open with Archive Manager > Extract
I directed the file opening to my personal 'david' folder
        ...... where a j601 folder was created
2. Applications > Terminal (.... yes, the dreaded Terminal)
sudo mv j601/libj601.so /usr/lib (Password required)
3. Right click Applications > Edit Menus > New Item
        into Name: J601 Software
into Command: use 'Browse' button to locate /home/david/j601/jw
J should now run directly from the Application Menu

I do sorely miss the edit colors and now would like to find a way to get
the package manager operational.

It appears that creating a '.deb' file that would self install along
with the required java packages is not too difficult from examples that
I have seen ... maybe next year !
