Yes I've had unpleasant run ins with Norton security as well. My understanding 
is that the firewall and malware detector that ship with Vista are quite 
capable so 3rd party solutions just add cost & complications IMO. For my Vista 
machine at home I use the free version of AVG (7.5) for virus protection with 
no problems.

My work laptop (running Vista Business connected to a domain at work) has no 
problem using resources on my Workgroup at home (Shares on XP, Vista computers, 
QNAP server & printer).

You don't need to connect to the workgroup to see resources on it. Try opening 
the Network and Sharing Center and making sure that Network discovery is turned 
on.

UNC shares work fine for me, but in the instances that I've had problems, I 
think that mapping a network drive has worked more often.
