J is not the only thing running on either of our systems.  (And, for
that matter, even J has two threads -- one for the computational
engine and another for the UI -- but hopefully that's not a significant
issue here.)

You got your 50% jump when you used your last core.  I did not try
to use my last core (because I knew that it was busy).
