This works in Dyalog APL too, even today.  

Well, actually, I remember the backspace working as described above in an
earlier version of Dyalog.  But, at least as of v11, you have to turn on
"overstrike" mode and use the left-arrow key (instead of the backspace
key) to compose an overstruck chracter. 

The backspace key now consistently erases the previous character,
independent of overstrike vs insert mode.  Maybe this is to be more
consistent with other Windows applications.  Or maybe my memory is faulty
(and this is the way it always was).
