What's wrong with using J as is? Avoid tacit programming if it concerns you.
It can easily be avoided. Define a few names to perform some of the
operations you are interested in having and to avoid involving tacit
programming. And if you have an adventurous student, let him/her dig into
the names you have defined and more advanced J facilities including tacit
programming.
