Yep. I do think of them both as definitions. What I see now is that  
you are looking for a term that distinguishes the tacit from the  
explicit form of definitions. If we accept the term paragraph for a  
explicit definition, do we need a separate word to describe a tacit  
definition? I was thinking of 'line' because  tacit definitions are  
necessarily one-liners, but this could be confusing since there can be  
explicit one-liners as well.

My final question is whether we need terms that provide finer  
granularity than the generic term 'definition'? In my current  
understanding of J, I don't feel this need, but there is a much wider  
world beyond my doorstep.
