I had to re-read this several times before I could figure out what you meant by your opening paragraph. And then I was wondering why you thought it would work without examining the length of a. Anyways, personally, I think that there are too many false assumptions a person could make, to be coding for all of them. I am not sure how to best deal with that issue though.
