Smaller boxes and better hardware for graphics. Multitasking, virtual memory, device independence. Graphics have been around for a long time. CAD packages and other graphics systems were available but very expensive. I was involved with distributing work among many computers all over the world over thirty years ago. Is that cloud computing? I saw a 3-D display at the University of Houston in the same time frame. It was only a stick figure of a plane taking off and landing. But it was different from anything in 3-D today as you could move your head around and see it fly from different views. It was not a hologram, but worked like one.
The big change today is cost. All these things that cost millions of dollars then now cost hundreds.
