Verbs also have rank. For example, + is rank zero. So when used with nouns
of any rank they are added one atom at a time and there is no dependence
between atoms.

As to whether 1 2,:3 4 is a matrix. You say that is must not be as +/ .* is
not a primitive. If a primitive that treats it as a matrix then it can be
considered a matrix,.
   %.1 2,:3 4
 _2    1
1.5 _0.5

Notice that the rank three array below is considered to be a two-item list
of matrices:
   >:i.2 2 2
1 2
3 4

5 6
7 8
   %.>:i.2 2 2
 _2    1
1.5 _0.5

 _4    3
3.5 _2.5
