Should characters such as < and & need to be escaped when passed in as a meta data value for a folder?

Is there a need to escape the meta data values which are passed in when I 
create a folder?  At present, using the chemistry library I get a failure when 
passing in a character such as < in the map which is fed to the createFolder 
method.
