I have just installed Gallery 2.2.3-typica on my laptop without any kind of
problem. It has been really straightforward, actually:

After unpacking the tarball, they only thing I did was to write a little
configuration file with the following:

========
vserver!default!document_root = /Users/alo/tmp/gallery2/
vserver!default!directory_index = index.php,index.html

vserver!default!extensions!css,gif,jpg,png!handler = file
vserver!default!extensions!css,gif,jpg,png!priority = 1

vserver!default!extensions!php!handler = fcgi
vserver!default!extensions!php!priority = 10
vserver!default!extensions!php!handler!balancer = round_robin
vserver!default!extensions!php!handler!balancer!type = interpreter
vserver!default!extensions!php!handler!balancer!local1!host = localhost:9999
vserver!default!extensions!php!handler!balancer!local1!env!PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN = 5
vserver!default!extensions!php!handler!balancer!local1!interpreter =
/usr/bin/php-cgi -b 9999
========

after which I launched cherokee (latest trunk), and accessed it through the
web server. It worked as expected.
