I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work.  However, as you know,  
the more complexity the more odds to fail. My advice: try to keep it  
simple.

Does the images change often?  If not so, a periodic rsync could keep  
an updated copy of the images in the web server - which would speed  
things up.

BTW, independently of which option to end up implementing, it's  
important to tweak I/O-cache if you are looking for performance. The  
configuration options are located in the "Advanced" section of  
Cherokee-Admin. It allows you to define how many file may be cached.
