Cherokee is not running as root, but as a separate user.  And I am using
cherokee-admin to start cherokee.

Tried running as root, but this results in the same error.

I guess so. At least, it contains a folder called "sysconfig"

Interestingly enough, cherokee does run, when I start it from the
command line. But it still produces an error message:

(warning) Couldn't initialize spawn mechanism.
[27/08/2009 19:56:12.601] (error) spawner.c:86 - Could initialize SHM
'/cherokee-spawner-32248': Function not implemented
