Please ignore the last mail. I hate to admit this, but it *was* a permission issue :(
While I checked the permissions of my web content (folders and files) a thousand times, I completely ignored the parent folder. While I still have no idea why/how the permissions changed (never touched it), cherokee is working fine, now that I corrected them.
