What is stale-while-retrieving mean? Unfamiliar. I would try to provide an extension manager for this. So one can set say .gif to 4 hours, .jpg to 4 hours, .html to 30 mins, .php to 30 secs, etc. Allow that sort of granularity. Also, need to create some sort of each to manage purge mechanism. This is where someone can say whatever URL in the cache currently to ignore the cache version and go get a new one.
