Thanks for the replies, both on-list and private.  I can now confirm that my
problems had *nothing* to do with Cherokee.  I failed to increase my swap
space when the memory on my VPS was expanded.  So I was running a 2:1 ratio
of RAM to swap.  Yikes!  Remarkably, everything ran well, even uWSGI.  But
it should come as no surprise that adding PHP -- the foundation of Wordpress
-- quickly pushed my server over the edge.  I increased swap to a 1:1 match
with RAM and -- voilĂ ! -- problem solved.  Old lesson relearned: when
thrashing, check the virtual memory balance.
