Yes, I did that:

This is my rule:

Incoming IP/Port: Port 4040

AND

Rule Type: Directory
Web Folder: /static

Handler: Static Content
Document Path: /var/www

For example, I have a file at /var/www/image.png and want to access it
via a request to localhost:4040/static/image.png, I get a 404. If I
create a subfolder named static and put image.png in there, the file is
found.
My question was, if I could avoid creating that static directory and
access image.png even if it is located at /var/www with a request to
localhost:4040/static/image.png.

I hope I could clarify my point.
