Have you heard about News (nntp) and following mailing list via Gmane? In my mailer program I can simply mark threads as ignored if I'm not interested and they would never show up. In the practice, I quickly skim over the new messages, read what I'm interested in and the rest mark as 'all read'. It's convenient since it does not clog my inbox, can be read whenever I like (although I read news with the same mailer program). For forums, otoh, one has to register and open browser whenever one wants to post/read... Of course different people have different preferences, but I'm going to stay with mailing list & #cherokee...
