But once the thermostat's opened the net effect will be 
the same: even with full coolant flow the cooling
system's unable to keep up with the demand.  Besides,
won't delaying the opening of the thermostat cause the
engine to heat up faster?

If the original poster has a coolant overflow tank he
should drain it and check for the presence of any oily
residue.  If some's found it could be a failing head
gasket...  8^(
