Well, my original thought was to mimic the build-up in the Sept. issue of
CHP. The specs are as follows:

406ci
10:1 compression
AirFlow Research 210cc heads, std. exh.
208/1.60-inch valves
Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake
Holley 750 cfm
Crane mechanical street roller
236/244 degrees @0.050-inch tappet lift
0.525-/0.543-inch valve lift
112-degree lobe separation angle
Hedman 1-5/8 in. headers
Borla XR-1 exhaust
MSD-6AL ignition

Power Data
RPM TQ HP
2,500 434 207
3,000 445 254
3,500 466 311
4,000 472 359
4,500 490 420
5,000 494* 470
5,500 465 487*
6,000 421 481

I was comparing these numbers to the numbers of the crate 454 that GM
offers. The 454's torque peaks at 500 ft./lb @ 3250 RPM and 425 @ 5250
RPM...

However, I think Cliff has talked me into going with a slightly different
combo using cast iron heads, a different cam, dual plane manifold and stock
rods... similar to his setup and still producing respectable numbers...
(497tq @3900rpm and 421hp @5200rpm)

This setup should cost less than the 454 or the afore mentioned 406 just
because smallblock parts are cheaper than big block parts from what I've
seen in the catalogs... besides the parts for the engine itself, I don't
have to change the front springs and I already have small block headers, so
I don't have to buy new headers, not to mention the savings in weight...
Whether I get the big block or the small block, they're both gonna be too
much for my drive train to handle, so I figure the big block is
overkill/bragging rights. I'd rather have more $$ to spend on the tranny
upgrade, gear swap and posi I'm gonna need in the future :)

This brings up a new question though.. I'm wondering if pulley setups are
the same for all small blocks? Can I use the pulleys from my 307?
