I am reading Smokey's books now and he writes about the 66 Chevelles. There
were three built. The 1st Smokey Yunick 66 Chevelle was the #1 Prototype car
built by Chevy. It was built with a 427 in it. Smokey writes in his new
autobiography that he ran a 1966 black and gold #13 Chevelle at Daytona in
66, 67, and 68. Three different black and gold number 13 cars. The first one
was built from the silver prototype 427 Chevelle that came from Chevy
engineering. Mario Andretti drove it at Daytona in 66 and blew the engine.
The second 66 Chevelle had a chassis designed and built by Chevy R&D and was
driven by Curtis Turner. Turner put the car on the pole at Daytona 1967 but
blows engine in the race. They take this car to next race at Atlanta where
Turner crashed it. Smokey had it crushed into a cube and the cube sat at his
shop for 28 years. In 1968 he built a third 66 Chevelle and this one became
the famous "cheater" car that was not allowed to run at Daytona. Smokey
writes a whole chapter in his book on this car and it is interesting to read
his version of the story. Smoke says most of the stories written about this
car were not true. Smokey later found that last 66 Chevelle he built in 68
and restored it then sold it for 100K.
