I believe this "myth" comes from the early days of radial tires. When
radials first became popular the tire companies did say that reversing the
rotation of the tires would cause the belts to break or loosen & cause the
tire to blow out. I can remember tire rotation charts that said front to
back only, do not criss-cross.
I don't think this has been a problem for many years now but the myth still
lives on.
