I second the be careful and check it out opinion.
If the car checks out clean at the DMV(license agency) then you are OK.
My car has a duplicate(non factory) VIN installed on the drivers side door
pillar. The title also reflects this: "duplicate VIN TAG installed" is typed
on the title.
