Here in NY, two highjacked planes crashed into the World Trade towers about
18 minutes apart, causing them both to collapse. Two buildings, roughly 110
stories each. On the average day, 40 to 50 thousand people work in those
towers. Obviously, several thousands of people are dead. All subway and most
bus service is stopped. All bridges and tunnels are closed, as well as all
area airports. Sirens are going off everywhere. I live just across the East
River, and luckily for me the smoke is headed south right now. It's pretty
horrific to look down the block and see a gigantic plume of black smoke
coming from where those giant towers used to be. In Manhattan, everything
south of Canal Street is covered with thick dust and debris. At least 4 more
highjacked planes are still unaccounted for. Good luck to you all. Let's
hope that we can get those last planes out of the air with minimal losses,
and let's try to pray for or at least think about peace and the end of the
hateful killing that is going on today. If the wind (& smoke) starts heading
my way, or especially if anything else happens to New York City, I'll
probably try to get out of here. I can only get channel 2 (CBS) on cable,
nothing on the portable TV. It's also difficult to get a phone line. I'm
hoping I don't lose my internet connection.
