Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List ------------------------------------------------------------ The Mayor of NY has just gotten on the television to report that one or more people are running telemarketing scams, asking people to make donations to the WTC cause. The Mayor said that these are illegal scams, and that the ONLY groups who are authorized to collect money to aid in this tragedy are known registered charities such as The Red Cross, and furthermore, that those organizations ARE NOT calling people to solicit donations. The Mayor has urged that anybody who receives a phone call asking for a donation should pretend that they want to mail in a donation, get as much information as you can about who and where these people are, including using *69 or caller ID to try to find out their phone number, and report them to the FBI. This is a terrible tragedy, and the fact that people would try to use it for their own profiteering scheme is an atrocity.
