The replacement knobs had a screw that they hooked on with.
If the problem is just the rivet come undone, I wound drill it carefully and
put in another rivet.

The problem with a screw is that it will tend to unscrew itself as you use
the handle. That's why the originals were pressed in. I don't think they
were actually riveted, but as Dave said, you should be able to drill down
the center of the shaft and put a rivet in there.

get a wire coathanger and cut a 6" piece. take needle nose pliers and curl
the end to hook on the clip. on the other end curl it for a handle. then
take a flat screwdriver or putty knife to expose the clip. take you new tool
and hook it on the clip. release and remove your screwdriver and pull gently
with the coathanger. very simple.

I'm sure this would work, but: A) If the clip is exposed, what do you need
the coat hanger tool for? Just grab the clip with a needlenose pliers. and
B) This does nothing to stop the clip from flying off. Good idea about using
a putty knife though. There is also a tool you can buy at just about any
parts store for exactly this purpose.

IMO it's much better to rotate the handle so that the open end of the clip
faces up, then put a strip of masking tape across the bottom below the clip.
That way when you push down on the clip, it gets stuck to the tape.

Are we flagellating a moribund equine yet?
