George,

I'd be leery of putting plastic looms on a heater hose...the hoses do get
hot. I agree that the slip on type, especially in a stainless or chrome
look, leaves a lot to be desired. Spectre does make a stainless steel
braided rubber hose in various lengths. Of the choices, the 6 foot would
work for both 5/8" and 3/4" at $14.00 per hose ($28 total). The clamps they
make are red/blue and are $9.00 each ($36 total). I used this same hose
with their (now discontinued I suppose) compression type fittings and it
lasted 6-8 years before I changed them out. They were still good but didn't
match the changes I made underhood. Total comes to about $64 from Summit or
Jegs. Look at http://www.dalesplace.com/images/chevelle/engine3.jpg for a
picture of my engine bay when I had these types of hoses. If using this
type, I'd also advise lubricating the heater core bungs real good with a
silicone lubricant. When you want to remove the hose, you can't simply cut
it like a plain heater hose - you have to be able to "twist" it
back-and-forth to loosen it...hence the lubricant.

There's a company called Coolflex (http://www.coolflex.com) that sells
stainless steel hose (not a braided rubber) that is good looking but
expensive for my tastes on a street car - $295 for two 44" lengths (you have
to cut) and two chrome ends. Summit has a "house" brand of the same type of
stuff for $130.
