The vent line you are referring to was attached by a hose to a vapor recovery can that was mounted on the drivers side of the radiator support. The can had another hose attached to the carburetor. The vapors from the fuel tank were drawn from the can into the carburetor. If your car has been modified at all the can has probably been removed. I don't like the idea of just letting the vapors vent into the engine compartment. It seems like a fire hazard to me. I disconnected the line at the fuel tank and attached a vent hose that ends back by the fuel tank filler. Now the steel line is capped off at both ends and used for nothing.
