I did some asking around and so far the consensus is that the only '68-72 A-Bodies to use an 8.5" 10-bolt rear are the '71-72 Skylark and some '71-72 Cutlasses. At this point my guess would be that possibly GM chose to test the 8.5" on these models because the Chevelle and LeMans/GTO were the big names and sellers in the musclecar field and it might be bad publicity for them if the new 8.5" developed some problems.
