I own a 98 too. $600.00 is cheap. Changing fuel filters I guess is the key to keeping them working. my partner has a 2000 and his went out. His was out of warranty. I mentioned to him that I'd call GM about it. he got his $674.00 back. I'd try calling GM and tell them you have heard several stories about bad fuel pumps. maybe you can get reimbursed
