The theory was that management had to step in and take over in order to get product out the door. They used whatever backlog of parts was available in order to complete the vehicles. Once the supply of 'correct' parts (door panels, etc..) was exhausted, parts from similar vehicles were substituted. Atleast that is how I remember it. I definitely would check with Tom, he is the 'historian'.
