Usually you test charging voltage at the battery. All you need is a
volt-meter. It's pretty simple. If the voltage is fluctuating wildly, then
the problem is in the regulator.

Was running my car and turned it off and upon a restart, it failed. Checked
the battery and it was dead. It is brand spanking new. Anyway I then looked
at the generator and one of the slip-on clips was off. No problem, I pushed
it back on but it was difficult and the back of this generator looks pretty
nasty. The male leads that the slip-ons attach to look real bad so I am
wondering if there is an easy way to put a meter on the generator to verify
that it is in fact changing/working?
