the tranny will shift without out a vacuum hookup, but it will only shift at high rpms, or if you manually up shift it like a stick.  The advance on the distributor has nothing to do with the tranny shifting.  Check the vacuum line down to the tranny for leaks, splits, or not being hooked up.  The vacuum module on the tranny is on the right (passenger side) of the case, it hooks up to a fitting on the intake behind the carb.
