Thanks everyone.  I found a set of short valve covers online that have an angled rear one one of them so that the booster will not be an issue.  As for the water pump.  There is a space between the water pump and the timing chain cover, so..as the idea goes, it ia a long neck pump.  Thanks for the help....BTW what opinion, if any, do ya'll have about the gear systems that replace the timing chain?  Good...Bad....Loud??  I hear there is a loud whine that comes with installing them, especially at high revs.

How do you know if you have a short or long water pump?  Will tall valve covers fit on a 396 in a Chevelle with a power brake booster, or do you have to use the ahort ones?  Any advice on installing valve covers to prevent leaks?  I like the long bolt posts (not sure what the technical term for them is) that are used to attach the valve cover to the head.  Any comments on them?  Good (leak free) or bad (leak prone)?
