grease.

The idea behind
grease in the center of the hub is that when the bearings build heat and the
grease thins is that this keeps the grease from slinging out of the bearing it
self
(as there is no
where for it to go) and it will accutualy help feed the bearing with grease.
It is a practice that has been used for years, and if nothing else it
certainly can't hurt............
