Tom,
I took both the front and back windows out of my 65 with a tool I bought from Murray's. It has an L shaped hook blade that you work in behind the glass and then pull to cut the old sealant. Sometimes it works better to heat the blade with a torch. I was able to remove the back window ( the most expensive ), without any problems. The windshield, however, was a different story, and I got too aggressive and rushed, cracking a corner. I made myself feel better by telling myself it was 37 years old anyway and boy, a new one will sure be nicer to look through. Ya know, if you're going through all the work to paint the car up nice n'all, it may be worth the $110 to get a shiny new windshield anyway. Good luck with whatever you decide..
