We finally got to where we could replace the '83 Elky....I decided to give Jana the 78 SS so it would get a lot less use and abuse from carrying my tools and get a truck. I wound up with a 3/4 ton bruiser with the stiffest suspension I've ever experienced first hand. This truck is as tight as a drum everywhere and the engine only has 6k on it in the last seven years. Unfortunately that means the carb is shot and the tranny doesn't downshift, but these are easily fixed later...in the meantime it's driveable and is actually pretty smooth.
Here's some pics... http://users3.ev1.net/~woodcat/NewTruck1.html http://users3.ev1.net/~woodcat/NewTruck2.html Anyone know if the TH-400 used a kickdown cable like the TH-350? There doesn't seem to be one, nor a place to mount one (on the tube that carries the vacuum to the booster). It won't down shift under any amount of pedal pressure. The vacuum line isn't connected to manifold vacuum, but to a carb line and it's T'd to another line going to the vacuum ball by the heater core....does this matter? Also the idle sucks and wasn't fixed with new plugs. I figure the carb is a mess. It pings at full throttle and seems like the secondaries aren't opening up. What operates the back flapper on the carb (over the secondaries)...it's wide open on my Edelbrock 1406, but on the Quad, there doesn't seem to be anything controlling when the flap opens. There's a place for a rod to open the door, but I don't get where it attaches to. The bottom doors open to the manifold fine, but the truck bogs and pings loudly if you give it too much gas. No leaks anywhere except the tranny seal in the front and it's a very slow one (doesn't drip). Overall, for $2100, we got a good truck....just gotta get a few things done in the next few weeks to make it run better.
