Subject: [Chevelle-List] column shift problems

I've got shifter problems on my ragtop & am looking for suggestions.  The car was a column shift power glide & is now a 400TH with the column shift.  I drove home the other night, pulled in the garage & couldn't get the shifter to move above drive.  I was able to hold the car & get a block behind the wheel.
Last night I jacked it up & disconnected the shift linkage from the trans & was able to shift the trans through all the gears from below.  The linkage all appears to be connected properly with nothing binding.  So, apparently the problem is in the steering column.  Before I tear into this tilt column is there anything I should look for or beware of?  I've torn down a couple of standard columns over the years but have never been into a tilt unit.
    Advise & tips welcome.

Thanks,
