I had a 73 454 that would develope a bad knock, scared the hell out of me. after not being able to find the source of the knock, a machanic I knew told me it was carbon buildup,he took a can of GM top engine cleaner, popped the air cleaner off, and ran the engine at about 1500 rpm and started to pour the GM top engine cleaner slowly into the carb, the enging started to bog down and after half the can was in, he let off the gas and dumped the rest of the can down the carb and let it kill the engine. let it set for about 30 mins and than started it up and put it in low gear and ran it medium hard, man did it smoke! but it took care of the knock, and the knock sounded like it was ready to throw a rod, it pounded hard, in the time I owned that engine I had to do that procedure one time after that and it fixed the problem, this can be bought over the counter at any GM dealer, Good Luck.
