To all who replied: Thanks. The spacers will get removed and I think I will be happier! The car does have new springs in the back already; new springs + spacers = too much force.
Interestingly enough, I went to a junkyard today to look for parts and get sunburned. I found one Chevelle with a 12 bolt rear end and it had the spacers on the axle too. Must have been a half popular option years ago. (about the 12 bolt, it was half buried in mud (not dirt, wet mud) and looks like it had been there for years (at least 15) judging by how many trees had grown up around it. I don't think it was salvageable. Those are spring risers generally used just to raise the rear end instead of twist-in spacers since it didn't affect the spring rate. I remember people using them long ago with air shocks to jack the back of the car up or they used them instead of replacing old, sagging springs. Definitely not factory items.
